Gloucester Marine Terminal Gets Largest Rooftop Solar Array in North America
Nice article (below) with a great investment but they could have probably reduced their initial investment by 35% ($14.7million ) using geothermal with solar. The nice thing about geothermal, it takes the energy demand down by 50 to 80% depending on type of heating cooling system the terminal may have. Although you don’t get all the renewable energy certificates (SRECS) it does shrink the initial investment significantly. Even for commercial there are still tax credits ( grants until 2012) for geothermal.
If they analyze the return on investment using IRR, MIRR and NPV the geothermal / solar solution provides the best return. Unfortunately few people understand the value of using geothermal with solar and few companies exist that know how to bring both together successfully. At the end of the day it is the ROI or return on investment that should drive the renewable energy solution.

The Gloucester Marine Terminal in New Jersey will soon be home to the United States’ largest rooftop solar installation.
The Terminal, owned by the Holt family, will have a $42 million
solar array installed on top of its 1.1 million square-foot
refrigerated warehouse. Known as the Riverside Renewable Energy, LLC,
the project will employ 27,528 photovoltaic solar panels that will
produce 9-megawatts of energy — the equivalent of powering 1,500
homes. The solar array is expected to satisfy 80% of the Terminal’s
energy demand.
SunPower (Nasdaq: SPWRA)
will supply and install the solar panels. Construction on the
facility is underway, and installation is expected to be complete this
fall.
The Holt family says the project is dependent on several government
incentive programs including the federal Investment Tax Credits that
offer tax incentives for the installation of renewable technologies.
Additionally, the project will utilize New Jersey’s Solar Renewable
Energy Credits (SRECs). The SREC’s can be sold to utilities as they try
to meet the state’s Renewable Portfolio Standard.
New Jersey, through its strong incentive program, has become one of
the nation’s largest developers of solar power. Currently, it ranks
number two in the country for solar capacity — only California has more
installed solar power.
